Seminar 2: 'Sleep, intimacy and family life'
26th April 2005
Room 19 AD 04
University of Surrey, Guildford
This day seminar provides a forum for discussing sleep in the context of intimacy and family life. Chaired by Professor Julia Brannen (University of London), the morning session comprises papers by Professor Jan Pahl (University of Kent) and Dr Jennifer Mason (University of Leeds) which give an overview of sociological approaches to the study of intimacy and family life. The afternoon session, chaired by Professor Sara Arber (University of Surrey) presents research on sleep within the family carried out by Dr Jenny Hislop, Rob Meadows and Sue Venn from the Centre for Research on Ageing and Gender (CRAG) at the University of Surrey. Focusing on women’s, men’s, and couple’s sleep, these presentations highlight the interrelationship between sleep, intimacy and family roles. Led by discussants Professor Jan Pahl, Dr Jennifer Mason, Dr Simon Williams (University of Warwick), and Professor Sara Arber, the final open discussion addresses two related questions:
What can the study of sleep contribute to our understandings of intimacy and family life?
What can studies of intimacy and family life contribute to the development of a sociology of sleep?
