Title: Mitochondrial Fission-Fusion Dynamics Governed by the Circadian Clock
Abstract: A cell autonomous circadian clock is resident in every cell of the mammalian body and regulates many key pathways including cellular metabolism. For example, mitochondrial fission-fusion dynamics and mitochondrial bioenergetics, including oxidative phosphorylation and generation of ATP is clock controlled. In my presentation I will give an overview on our recent insights into the cellular ATP production and how the clock controls mitochondrial dynamics, as well as attempt to provide a rational for linking this to the ongoing Football World Cup.

Title: Setting the pace for labour: How 3-dimensional patterning of the uterus during development combines with site-specific implantation to coordinate delivery of the foetus.
Abstract: Eutherian mammals have evolved multiple strategies for reproduction, ranging from polytocus species with low maternal investment and short gestation length, to monotocus species with high maternal investment and long gestation length. The different strategies have given rise to different challenges during parturition. Using the rat as an example, I will demonstrate that coordination of delivery of multiple foetuses from a duplex uterus occurs as a consequence of correct anatomical patterning of the reproductive tract during development combined with site specific implantation, which leads in turn to emergent electrical behaviour and coordinated contractions. Using biophysical measurements combined with 3D computer reconstructions of anatomy and electrical excitation I will compare the solution of the rat with that of the human and great apes.
