Faculty of Science, Engineering and Medicine ED&I Committee
The University of Warwick is proud of its diverse community of staff, students and visitors, and its place in our region. The University is committed to maintaining its excellent record in teaching and research by ensuring there is equality of opportunity for all, fostered in an environment of mutual respect and dignity. Established in 2022, the purpose of the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Medicine Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (ED&I) Committee is to identify and share good practice, and to make recommendations regarding ED&I issues affecting our staff, students, stakeholders and visitors. The SEM ED&I Committee is happy to hear from, and to support, other staff and student forums across the University's community.
To contact the Committee, please email SEMAdmin at warwick dot ac dot uk.
Membership
The membership of the Committee consists of staff representatives from each of the ten departments with the faculty; members of the University's Social Inclusion and Widening Participation teams; student representatives from a variety of departments; and members of the Faculty team. Other people are invited to the Committee as required for sharing good practice and updating the Committee on wider University events and policies among other things.
Governance
The Faculty ED&I Committee provides an annual report to the SEM Faculty Board via the Chair and feeds into the University's Social Inclusion Committee frequently. It provides updates to Heads of Department and other members of the faculty and university as necessary. The Committee currently meets bi-monthly.
Objectives
The objectives of the Committee are to engage staff and students in ED&I issues; to identify and share good practice; to make recommendations to the Social Inclusion Committee and SEM Faculty Board; to share information between members; to make funding recommendations for faculty-wide and cross-faculty ED&I events and programmes; and any other items that fall within the Committee's remit.

Good Practice: Autumn 2024
SEM ED&I Forum: Tuesday 22 October 2024
The SEM ED&I Forum met for the first time this academic year on Tuesday 22 October. The Forum welcomed three new student representatives and a new Faculty Widening Participation Co-ordinator. Members of the Physics PG Committee were invited to talk about a more university wide approach to period product supply, in line with the Athena Swan actions as set out at the end of the last round of accreditation. The QR code linking to a petition can be found hereLink opens in a new window and posters have been circulated to other faculties and departments. A lab coats paper was also presented to the Forum for comment, outlining the availability of lab coats and other protective equipment in a range of sizes for different body shapes. Issues were highlighted with comfort and sleeve length in lab coats, but the availability of protective footwear for engineering labs and other PPE was also discussed. There will be upcoming information on some menopause focus groups, and the potential for a cross-faculty event was raised.
The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday 12 December. Any questions can be sent to Becks via SEMAdmin at warwick dot ac dot uk.
