2020 Collaborative Student Community Service - Indonesia

An online presentation about community service in Indonesia

Students from UGM, ITB and UB participated in an online summer school, discussing local community needs and issues, and developing innovative responses. Despite the pandemic restricting their access to fieldwork and face to face learning, the students were able to engage with existing humanitarian challenges and work together to produce impressive outputs. Collaboration between the three universities through the ENHANCE project has renewed their collective focus on local humanitarian challenges and enabled students and staff to work and learn together.

Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) became the pioneer of 2020 Collaborative Student Community Service (SCS) together with ENHANCE team. During Practice Dialogue Workshop at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Indonesia UGM team proposed to conduct this collaborative student community service as a part of ENHANCE activities. It can be understood as UGM is the pioneer of SCS in Indonesia since it was launched for the first time in the year 1951. Initially, UoW, ITB, and University of Brawjiaya (UB) planned to participate in this activity, each university would send 10 students to UGM. However, due to Covid-19 pandemic, UGM changed the SCS activity into full online activity. That was the first time UGM conducted SCS in the online basis. 9 students from ITB and 19 students from UB participated together with 41 students from UGM to conduct online SCS in two units i.e., unit 2020-YO183 and unit 2020-YO198 from 29 June to 18 August 2020.

In the first unit, the students studied “Optimization of treatment of water pollution at Ngrancah River and Sermo Reservoir, and development of creative economy, tourism, and culture at Hargowilis and Hargotirto villages” under the supervision of Ir. Intan Supraba, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., IPM, ASEAN Eng. The second unit focused on “Optimization of productivity, product diversification, and wastewater treatment of tofu factory at Margo Agung and Margo Mulyo villages” with M.Rais Alfiansyah Taufiq, S.T., M.Sc.

The outputs included master plan of bioswale, design book of tourism gate, book of benefit of algae for health, 3D design of tofu center, and handbook of biogas reactor of tofu wastewater. Some of which have been shared via the youtube channels linked:
