ENHANCE Taxonomy

Overview

The ENHANCE Taxonomy aims at embedding community-based engineering in graduate engineering programmes for empowering the next generation of change agents. Community-based engineering education is an innovative approach that seeks to prepare engineering students with the knowledge, skills, and mindset necessary to address real-world challenges in collaboration with local communities, markets and industry. By integrating academic learning with community engagement, this educational model emphasizes the importance of understanding the social, cultural, and ethical dimensions of engineering practice. It fosters a sense of responsibility, empathy, and cultural competence among students, equipping them with the tools to design and implement contextually relevant solutions.

Key components and transformative impact

Contextual Learning and Community Engagement: Community-based engineering education places an emphasis on contextual learning by bridging the gap between theory and practice. It encourages students to step out of the classroom and engage directly with local communities, industry and other stakeholders gaining first-hand experience of the challenges they face. Through community engagement activities such as participatory research, needs assessments, and co-design processes, students develop a deep understanding of the social, cultural, and environmental factors that shape engineering problems. This experiential learning approach enables students to appreciate the complexity of real-world challenges and develop solutions that are sensitive to the unique needs and aspirations of the communities they serve.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration and Partnerships: Community-based engineering education recognizes the interdisciplinary nature of complex problems and encourages collaboration among students, faculty, and stakeholders from diverse backgrounds. By working in interdisciplinary teams, students learn to integrate perspectives from fields such as social sciences, public health, and policy to develop holistic solutions. Additionally, partnerships with community organizations, non-governmental organizations, and government agencies provide students with valuable mentorship, resources, and networks. These collaborations foster a sense of shared responsibility, create opportunities for knowledge exchange, and enable students to work with communities as equal partners in the problem-solving process.

Ethical and Social Responsibility: Community-based engineering education emphasizes the ethical and social dimensions of engineering practice. Students are encouraged to critically reflect on the impacts of their work, considering issues such as social justice, cultural sensitivity, and environmental sustainability. This focus on ethical decision-making equips students with the tools to navigate complex trade-offs and make responsible choices that prioritize the well-being of communities. Furthermore, community-based engineering education promotes a sense of social responsibility among students, inspiring them to use their technical expertise for the betterment of society. It cultivates a commitment to equity, inclusivity, and social impact, fostering a generation of engineers who are not only technically skilled but also empathetic and compassionate.

Transformative Impact and Empowerment: Community-based engineering education has the potential to generate transformative impact on both students and communities. For students, it offers an opportunity to develop a broader understanding of engineering practice and their role as change agents. It nurtures critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills, preparing them to address the complex challenges of the 21st century. Additionally, community-based engineering education empowers communities by involving them as active participants in the educational process. It promotes local ownership, builds capacity, and strengthens community resilience. By fostering partnerships between academia and communities, this educational model creates sustainable and contextually relevant solutions that address the needs and aspirations of communities.
