The development and integration of humanitarian engineering curriculum in Master Programme of Regional and Urban Planning (MPRUP) Faculty of Engineering Brawijaya University

New challenges for urban and regional planning graduates are currently associated with the context of problems and potential of engineers at national or local level. Indonesia has many disaster-prone areas where lack of good infrastructures, poverty and social gaps, public institutions and others which are relevant to the core tasks of Humanitarian Engineering.

Under the framework of ENHANCE project and in order to provide relevant educational experiences for students, Master Programme of Regional and Urban Planning (MPRUP) implemented new curriculum integrating humanitarian engineering in 2019. Developing curriculum was started in 2018. During the year, intensive regular meetings between educational staffs were run to evaluate the old curriculum. New constructed curriculum accommodated 15 courses related to humanitarian engineering which was initially only 8 courses either as compulsory or elective courses. Improvement of the learning outcomes, delivery method and assessment of courses were also performed by referring to ENHANCE taxonomy.

A four-year programme plan is also set to achieve the short-term aims for MPRUP as an outcome of the ENHANCE Project and to ensure sustainability of the curriculum. Three times internal evaluation of the new curriculum have been performed every semester since implemented in 2019. The evaluations included the effectiveness and efficiency of learning process, improvement of RPS (Semester Learning Plan), assessment methods, and innovation and adjustment the teaching and learning process as the impact of COVID-19 pandemic.
