ITB Contributes to Stunting Eradication Program in Greater Bandung Area

Collaborators in an online meetingITB in collaboration with the Pilar Tunas Nusa (NGO) and the local government of Bandung held a webinar discussing efforts to reduce the number of stunting cases as the number of stunting cases in West Java has reached 37%, higher than the national cases (27%). Stunting itself is a condition of failure to thrive in children under five due to chronic malnutrition. The collaboration focused especially on the first 1.000 days of children development. Considering stunting issue is one of big challenges in humanitarian engineering, the Rector of ITB, Prof. Reini Wirahadikusumah said: “Stunting is a real threat to Indonesia's young generation and future. Therefore, as a locally relevant issue, ITB will convey concrete contributions that can be made by the ITB community.” ITB’s contribution research and development related to stunting was led by the School of Life Science and Technology (SITH). Dr. Indra Wibowo, Deputy Dean for Academic Affairs of SITH, said that ITB is committed to taking a role in reducing stunting prevalence, yet stunting’s handling must be multidisciplinary and multinational. Over the past few years, ITB has carried out community empowerment, mapping, research, and the development of early detection kits with other collaborators to reduce the number of national stunting cases below 14% in 2024. More contribution from other disciplines at ITB were encouraged to provide solutions for supporting systems, such as infrastructure, environmental, and digital technologies.
