Workplace Inspection

Workplace Inspection Programme

The Workplace Inspection Programme (WPI) is a programme of planned inspections of laboratories and workshops (both research and teaching) within the School of Engineering with known significant hazards.

The aim of the programme is to identify issues that will allow us to improve health and safety standards in the School of Engineering. This will contribute to making the School of Engineering an inherently safer place for staff, students, vistors or anyone else who may be on site.

From 2021 the WPI will also feed directly into the University's ISO 45001 health and safety audit process so will involve a more thorough inspection.

Each inspection is generally expected to take about one hour. There will be a minimum of one weeks notice given should a space or spaces be selected for inspection and there will be the opportunity for designated 'space owner' to identify a suitable time slot to fit around other commitments. It is also permissible to nominate a 'deputy' to attend the inspection on behalf of the 'space owner, however the 'deputy' should be a senior member of the lab or workshop.

Unscheduled WPIs may be conducted at short; or with no prior notice should it be deemed necessary.

Inspections will primarily be conducted by Ian Rose but may also involve :

  • Adrian Seymour (Facilities Manager);
  • other members of the health and safety team;
  • others with with specialist knowledge in relation to activities conducted in the space(s) to be inspected; and
  • members of the School Management Team

Previous inspection reports can be found here.

Inspection archive can be found here.

Safety Tours

To supplement the WPI, a series of 'safety tours' will also take place. This will involve a pre planned tour within the School of Engineering and will involve members of the:

  • senior management team;
  • technical management;
  • worker representatives; and
  • the health and safety team.

A schedule for these has yet to be agreed but it is likely that they will occur outside of term e.g. Easter, summer and Christmas.
