Power Electronics PhD Student wins prestigious prize
Many congratulations to Ms Zohreh (Blossom) Mohammadi (pictured), who was awarded the top prize for her poster at the Annual Conference of the National Centre for Power Electronics, organized by EPSRC National Centre for Power Electronics and Powerelectronics UK.
The poster was on design and fabrication of trench power devices with silicon carbide material. power devices are made from silicon (Si), which has reached the limit of electric power loss reduction. With the superior physical and electrical properties of silicon carbide (SiC), we can expect to see a significant expansion in the amount of electric power conversion of electrical equipment as well as reduced energy loss.
Trench MOSFET is a type of power semiconductor switch, used in power systems such as
• Synchronous Rectification for AC/DC power supplies
• Battery Charger and Battery protection circuit
• Isolated DC to DC Converters
• DC motor drives
Blossom is supervised by Professor Phil Mawby and works in the School's power electronics group on Silicon Carbide power devices and systems; the leading group in the UK and Europe. Speaking of Ms Mohammadi's award, Phil said: "We are very proud of Blossom's achievement, in winning such a prestigious prize".
