Professor Nicholas Zabaras honoured by TUM Institute of Advanced Study with prestigious Hans Fischer Senior Fellowship in recognition of outstanding work on uncertainty quantification and computational mathematics and in anticipation of ground breaking research in the interface of computational science and materials physics.

The Warwick School of Engineering is delighted to announce that Professor Nicholas Zabaras has been invited to join the Technische Universität München Institute of Advanced Study (TUM-IAS). The TUM-IAS Hans Fischer Senior Fellowship is a highly prestigious award named after TUM Professor Hans Fischer (1881-1945), who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1930 for his pioneering work on haemoglobin and related structures.

Fellows of TUM-IAS are given freedom to pursue research activities without the burden of proposals or other bureaucratic requirements, which can lead to exceptional and unexpected results, leading to exciting new outcomes. Under the Fellowship (valued at more than 160,000 Euro), Prof. Zabaras will work with TUM colleagues to develop joint Warwick-TUM research activities on uncertainty quantification and predictive materials science. Prof. Zabaras will spend several shorter and longer periods of time as visiting professor at the TUM-IAS in order to strengthen the collaboration. The Fellowship will also fund several symposia with international participation and make feasible for PhD students at TUM to perform part of their research at the University of Warwick.

Prof Zabaras joined the School of Engineering in July 2014 from Cornell University in the USA. His main research focus is on the broad area of predictive modelling with emphasis in materials.

Speaking of the honour, Professor Zabaras said: “This award provides exciting and unique opportunities for collaboration between the University of Warwick and Technische Universität München at a time when both institutions are looking to strengthen their research on uncertainty quantification and predictive modelling in science and engineering”.
