MSc Humanitarian Engineering, 2023-24
"During my Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Warwick, I was left wanting to fill the gap between understanding technology, and exploring the ways in which it can be used to better the world. It was, and continues to be, my intention to work in political environments focusing on development after finishing my studies, but I found my technical degree made myself less competitive compared to other applicants for these roles.
Upon being recommended the MSc Humanitarian Engineering degree, I was able to gain further knowledge on the application of engineering to improve lives, whilst gaining the social-oriented qualification I needed, all on top of my technical foundation. The course has introduced me to a wide array of interesting and diverse classmates, academics, and modules, exploring how approaches such sustainability can improve urban design, to water systems, to designing refugee camps.
The course has granted me access to see humanitarian principles in action from the many field trips we were able to experience, to hearing about fascinating projects from plenty of industry professionals throughout my entire time on the course. This course has provided me the ability to pivot into roles in socioeconomic and international development; whilst the humanitarian principles I have now become accustomed to, can provide me a competitive advantage as organisations across the world are focusing more of their attention towards sustainability and the betterment of others."
