Interdisciplinary Collaboration in Systems Medicine
The Interdisciplinary Collaboration in Systems Medicine (ICSM) group seeks to use the principles of engineering and data science to help tackle challenges within the intensive care and emergency medicine settings. By utilising both mechanistic and data-driven modelling approaches, we aim to provide in silico evidence about novel treatment strategies that can inform future clinical trials. We also aim to directly improve patient care by creating decision support tools that can assist clinicians in treating their patients.
The ICSM Cardiopulmonary Simulation Platform
The ICSM Cardiopulmonary Simulation Platform is the result of 25 years of continuous development and allows for the creation and simulation of patient-specific digital twins to optimise treatment strategies and assess extra clinical parameters which wouldn't be easily accessible at the bedside.
The simulator is contains no black boxes and consists of hundreds of mass conserving equations which describe the function of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems.
Each of the equations is solved in series in an iterative manner, with the initial conditions for the next timestep originating from the results of the equations in the previous time step.
