ICSM Group News & Updates
Keep up to date with the latest news from the ICSM group!
Publication Update - July 2025
Huge congratulations to Hang on the publication of his most recent work in Intensive Care Medicine. The study Link opens in a new windowdemonstrates the power of using a TabPFN machine learning model for the early prediction of NIV outcome in patients with acute respiratory failure.

Respiratory Care Convention - July 2025
Members of the ICSM team recently attended the Fisher & Paykel Respiratory Care Convention in Nottingham. It was great to hear from leading clinicians and physios about the advancements being made in non-invasive respiratory support, both within the hospital environment and at home too. Huge congratulations to Hang for winning the best poster prize (with Hossein coming in a close second), marking 3 consecutive wins for the group at the event (Liam 2023, Hossein 2024)!
Outbreaks in Pulmonology - March 2025
Prof. Declan Bates, the group lead, was invited to open this year's Outbreaks in PulmonologyLink opens in a new window conference in Modena, Italy.
Publication Update - March 2025
Congratulations to Hang on the publication of the first paper of his PhD in Critical Care. The study compares cutting edge machine learning methods with current clincial scores and indices to predict the outcome of high flow nasal cannula therapy in patients with acute hypoxaemic respiratory failure.
Publication Update - January 2025
Congratulations to Hossein on the publication of the first paper of his PhD in Respiratory Research. The study utilises mechanistic computational modelling to quantify the airway pressures generated by high flow nasal cannula in patients with acute hypoxaemic respiratory failure.
ESICM Congress - October 2024
Liam and Sina recently attended the annual European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) congress, networking with industrial and academic partners, and listening to leading clinicians discuss the latest in intensive care research. It was great to see some of our studies highlighted by Prof. John Laffey in his talk to the congress!
