Thermal Properties Laboratory

We have recently received funding of £1.95m through InnovateUK to develop the facilities available within our labs, as part of the Midlands Energy Research Accelerator (ERA). The funding has been used to enhance and extend our range of equipment and laboratory space.

Simultaneous Thermal Analyser (STA)

The STA functions as both a calorimeter and thermogravimetric analyser, measuring heat flow and weight change simultaneously

a

Dilatometer (TMA)

The TMA easily and rapidly measures sample displacement to nanometre precision (growth, shrinkage, movement, etc.) as a function of temperature, time, and applied force

a

Calvet Calorimeter

The Calvet Calorimeter determines of a wide range of properties including enthalpy, melting energy, specific heat, glass point, crystallinity, reaction enthalpy and thermal stability

a

Xenon Flash Analyser (XFA)

Rapid measurement of the thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity of various kinds of solids, powders and liquids

a

Guarded Heat Flow Meter

Determines the thermal conductivity of a wide range of low-to-medium thermal conductivity materials by using guarded heat flow method

Rubotherm Magnetic Suspension Balance

Used for measuring the adsorption of refrigerants on adsorbents with controlled temperatures from -20°C to 150°C and pressures up to 100 bar

Rheometer

Determines fluid viscosity over a range of temperatures from below 0˚C to above 150˚C

b

Differential Scanning Calorimeter

Used for find phase transitions and calculating the specific heat capacity of materials

HFM

Heat Flow Meter

Thermal Conductivity testing of low-conductivity materials
