Waste handling

Each laboratory contains a white general waste bin. Only general waste should be placed in here.

Chemical waste should be placed in a sealed container of an appropriate size. A Chemical Waste Form (available from Engineering Stores) should be completed and two copies of a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) printed. One SDS is submitted to Engineering Stores with a completed Chemical Waste Form for their records. The other SDS must be attached to the waste chemical container and placed in the external waste chemical store for collection.

Broken glass should be placed in the broken glass bin in D004C.

General bulky waste should be disposed of in the General Waste Skip, accessed via Engineering Stores. Metal waste should be recycled in the Metal Skip, accessed via Engineering Stores.

Cleaning

Laboratories should be kept clean and tidy by the users of the space. Cleaners are only permitted to empty the general waste bins. The cleaning of work surfaces is the responsibility of the space users.Notices should be placed by any hazardous areas to warn cleaners of Estates staff of hazards (e.g. experiments running). Signage should be placed on the laboratory door to warn of restricted entry due to ongoing experiments.

All labs contain blue roll dispensers and hand washing/sink facilities.

A vacuum cleaner (wet and dry) is stored in D015.

There is a Spill Kit in D004C, next to the sink.

PPE

Task-specific SSOWs should be consulted for PPE requirements. In addition:

  • Safety boots should be worn at all times when entering laboratories. The exception is D100 (STET Office).
  • Laboratory coats are to be stored in D100 or in laboratories themselves. Soiled laboratory coats should be laundered via Engineering Stores.

Chemical storage

The University now uses a chemical inventory system, Lapcup. If your project involves the use of chemicals, please speak to your supervisor.

Equipment/parts storage

D015 contains blue cabinets where general parts are stored. There is further under bench storage within each laboratory. Several laboratories contain hand tool boxes (black/yellow boxes) for frequently used hand tools. Engineering Stores contains a wide range of other tools for hire.

Student projects

Undergraduate or MSc project students are based in the Project Workspace. Worktops should be left clear and clean at the end of each day. There is under desk storage for projects. Undergraduate or MSc project work must only take place Monday – Friday, between the hours of 8:30am and 4:30pm.

Lone working

Lone working must only take place where the task-specific SSoW does not forbid it.
