20% Pay Deduction Decision Lifted
Text of the Letter (Sent Tues 6 June)
As you will know agreement has now been reached between UCU and the universities on a three-year pay settlement which the trades union will recommend to its members in the next few weeks. As a consequence UCU has suspended its action short of a strike with immediate effect and this should mean that all staff will now return to normal working as required under their contracts.
Whatever views are held about the merits of the settlement I am sure that everyone will want to make every effort to ensure that marks for coursework and examinations are available so that students can graduate as normal next month. To this end I expect that everyone will give an immediate priority to completing marking and ensuring that these marks are reported to the relevant Examination Boards scheduled to be held in the next few weeks.
I wrote previously notifying you that the University would not accept partial completion of your contract and that 20% of pay would be withheld while you were taking part in the action short of a strike. Now that the industrial action has been suspended the University will lift its decision to withhold pay on the clear understanding that you will resume normal duties and will ensure that marks are made available to Examination Boards by the agreed date. This means that no pay will be deducted from your salary as a result of your participation in the action short of a strike.
I would be grateful if you would let the Registrar and your Head of Department know as soon as possible that you are now working normally and will be able to complete your marking on time. Only once the Registrar has received this assurance will he be able to take the administrative steps necessary to cancel the decision to withhold 20% of your pay.
