This page is for students who commenced their programme of study since (and including) academic year 2022/23.
Loading/Requirements
The normal (minimum) load is 120 CATS. The maximum load is 150 CATS.
Students must take the following:
- 70 CATS of core modules
- Either:
- One optional core modules and one List A module, OR
- Both optional core modules
- Enough optional modules (including Unusual Options) to meet the normal load of 120 CATS.
See Requirements for Progression for the criteria you need to satisfy to progress to Year 3.
In particular, note that to transfer to the Business School in Year 3, you must achieve at least 50% in a business (IB) module in the first or second year. This can only be achieved at the first attempt or a further first attempt (i.e. not a capped resit).
Core Modules and Optional Core Modules
There are 70 CATS of core modules and 20 CATS of optional core modules. You must take at least one optional core.
There are no required core modules, i.e. there are no modules that you must pass to progress to Year 3.

Optional Modules
Your selection of optional modules is extremely important. You must ensure that
- you meet the regulations for your degree programme
- you take modules which may be pre-requisites for other modules you wish to take later on in your degree programme
- you take modules which are required if you are considering transferring to another degree programme
- you follow any special procedures for registering for certain modules, including for Unusual Options.
[Update November 2025: MA240 was missing from List A, now added.]

You should check the Modules from Other Departments page for information about any special procedures that must be followed to register for a module and for further advice.
Any modules not listed as Core or List B are considered Unusual Options. Permission to take these modules must usually be obtained with a completed Unusual Option form.
More about Unusual Options, including restrictions and deadlines, can be found in the Unusual Options section of the Handbook.
Second-year students are not allowed to take any MA3 or MA4 modules, as Unusual Options or otherwise. There are no exceptions to this rule.
Examinations
Term 1 maths modules are examined in April/early May straight after the Easter Vacation.
Term 2 maths modules are examined in Term 3 (late May and June).
Where a module is examined, 10 CATS modules are generally 2 hour exams and 15 CATS modules 3 hours. More about exams in the exams section of the Handbook.
Outcomes and Progression
Second-Year Learning Outcomes
After completing the second year students will have
- covered the foundational core;
- had the opportunity to follow options which build on their core knowledge;
- acquired sufficient knowledge and understanding to be in a position to make an informed choice of options in their final years.
Requirements for Progression
To progress to the third year of G1NC (when students transfer to Warwick Business School and are subject to Warwick Business School regulations), you must:
- have taken modules in accordance with the description under the heading Loading/Requirements at the top of this page
-
have an overall year mark of 40 percent or above
-
pass at least 90 CATS of modules at FHEQ Level 5 or above (UG Level 2 or above)
- obtain at least 50% in a business (IB) module in the first or second year
[from 25/26: interviews with WBS are no longer needed]
Second-Year Examination Boards - possible outcomes
The possible decisions from the summer Second-Year Examination Board for students taking modules for the first time are
- proceed to year 3 of G1NC if criteria 1-4 in the Requirement for Progression above are met.
- proceed to year 3 of G100 if criteria 1-3 in the Requirement for Progression above are met, but not criterion 4.
- take required resits in September, so that if they are passed, criteria 1-3. in the Requirements to Progression above will be met. Criterion 4 in the Requirements for Progression must be achieved at the first attempt.
The possible outcomes for the September (Resit) Examination Board, where resit marks are considered alongside original marks are
- proceed to year 3 of G100, if criteria 1-3 in the Requirements for Progression above are now met
- required resits at the next available opportunity. This would only be the case for a module if a student's most recent attempt was considered to be a Further First Attempt (FFA) for that module, e.g. due to mitigation or deferral of exams
- required to withdraw, in which case the student will be offered an Exit Award if possible.
It is possible for students to be out of phase with this sequence due to deferring their exams, temporary withdrawal, mitigation allowing resits to be taken as Further First Attempts (which would allow for a further capped resit) and so on. In these cases, students are considered at the next available Second-Year Examination Board.
Transferring to Warwick Business School
For regulations for G1NC once transfer to Warwick Business School has taken place please consult the Warwick Business School's Course Handbook.
If you are registered for a joint degree, you must still complete the course transfer process when the time comes to change to the other department (between the end of year 2 and the start of year 3 in the case of GL11 and G1NC).
