Mathematical Problem Solving Classes for Year 12 Students

This is a suite of 10 weekly, face to face classes held in a lecture theatre at the university and delivered by experienced teachers, who are invested in equipping students as mathematical problem solvers.

This course has been redesigned to focus more around the TMUA (Test of Mathematics for University Admission), which has been growing in popularity and is now used by many universities for admission to maths, economics, computer science and statistics degrees.

The classes have an explorative, workshop feel where students are equipped with tools, techniques and tips, and then supported to work through a number of related problems.

Dates

Aims

  • to train students as mathematical problem solvers
  • to provide relevant, insightful and powerful mathematical tools, techniques and tips which will enhance A level grades in maths and further maths
  • to equip students who may be preparing to take the TMUA (can also be used as preparation for the MAT and early preparation for STEP)
  • to provide a supportive environment in which students are encouraged to work together and discuss the mathematics they are working on with peers, course leads and current university students

Materials and Equipment

Students are asked to bring a refillable water bottle, something to write with and something to write on. All other materials will be provided. Students may wish to bring a snack to have before or after each class.

On satisfactory completion of the course, the students will receive a certificate based on the number of classes they attended, which can be used to enhance their applications for university or opportunities for which they may need to demonstrate mathematical aptitude.

Cost

This event is free to attend.

FAQs

Q: Will food be provided?

A: We will not provide food so it would be good for students to bring a snack to have before or after the classes start. There is a water fountain available near the room to refill water bottles.

Q: I don't study further maths, will I still be able to access the course content?

A: Yes. We are expecting to welcome both students who study A level maths, as well as those who are also planning to complete AS or A level further maths. These classes primarily draw from AS Maths content and topics, but will go into greater depth of understanding and develop greater levels of fluency. "
