Maths & Beyond

Bring your students along to experience what it's like to sit in a lecture theatre at the University of Warwick and join us on Tuesday 24 March, from 9.10am-3.20pm.

Maths and Beyond is a fun, interactive, Maths enrichment event for students in year 10 to inspire them and encourage them to consider taking their study of Maths to A level and beyond.

Throughout the day, the students will attend workshops which can act as a 'taster' to A level Maths, Further Maths and Core Maths to inspire them to take maths beyond GCSE and into post 16. There will also be an element of competition on the day with exciting prize to be won!

New to this year, the students will have an opportunity to hear from and network with University of Warwick Students, staff and alumni to find out more about what they love about maths, their own journey through education and why they chose a maths-related pathway.

This year at Maths and Beyond, we are delighted to welcome Jon Chase as our Keynote Speaker.

Jon is a science communicator, author and rapper based in South Wales, who believes that knowledge should be made available in a way that allows as many people as possible the opportunity to access to it.

He has presented science for BBC learning on TV and YouTube and also co-authored books on The Science of Star Wars, The Science of Harry Potter and The Science of Jurassic World. In 2017 he was awarded the Josh Award in Science Communication but is perhaps best known for his science raps, which he has produced for various organisations including NASA and the BBC. He also produces maths raps, which have become extremely popular on TikTok.

Aims

  • To inspire students beyond the curriculum and get them excited about maths
  • To give students an opportunity to taste a bit of A level Maths, Further Maths and Core Maths
  • To provide a context for students to consider their options and in particular, to take maths post 16

Who will benefit from attending?

This event is most suitable for any year 10 student who is interested (even if a little!) in maths and may consider taking Maths, Further Maths or Core Maths at AS or A level. Year 11 students are also welcome to attend.

FAQs

Q: Will lunch be provided?

A: Lunch will be provided for supervising teachers who bring a group to the event, students will be asked to bring a sandwich (or similar) and we will provide them with some additional snacks to supplement their lunch e.g. a snack bar and crisps (or similar)

Q: I don't have many students who have said that they plan to take maths at A level, should I still arrange to bring a group?

A: Yes! As the teacher, you know your students best. We ask that you bring any student who would be a viable candidate for post 16 Maths, Core Maths or Further Maths. Perhaps this event will be a catalyst or an influencing factor for those students who are 'on the fence'.

Q: I'd like to bring a student group but it will be too difficult to be able to get cover for the day, what can I do?

A: The students will need to be supervised by a DBS-checked member of staff from your school who will take responsibility for the group throughout the day. This does not need to be a maths teacher.

Q: I have some students with very specific needs, will it work for them to attend?

A: We aim to be able to accommodate all students. This is not always possible but if there is anything we can do to facilitate specific needs then we will try our best. Please get in touch with the event organiser, Fiona Kitchen, at who has experience of accommodating special requirements and needs at events, and can arrange to speak with you in more detail.

Q: Are students expected to wear uniform?

A: Yes, we ask that all students wear their uniform.
