Year 7 Maths Exploration Day
**Please note, this event will run twice, once in April and then again in July, please apply below for the date which is most convenient**
Tuesday 14th April 9.30am-2.30pm
Tuesday 7th July 9.30am-2.30pm
This is a fun, interactive, maths enrichment day for students in year 7. The day is designed to inspire and encourage year 7 students in their study of maths by helping them to think ahead about how the subject develops and the opportunities it can provide in the real world. The day is comprised of classroom-style workshops, with short opening and closing interactive plenary talks.
There will be interactive classroom sessions covering problem-solving and some enrichment of the school curriculum. Mathematics undergraduates will act as assistants in some of the sessions, giving students a valuable opportunity to interact with them. We also will offer short guided tours of the university campus.
We hope your students will leave this event inspired to pursue their study of maths, realising how much fun maths can be and where it could take them in the real world.
Aims
- For students to experience what it's like on a university campus
- For students to be exposed to mathematics which inspires them to think about the subject in a new way, and equips them with greater understanding of the topics covered
- For students to be encouraged to see themselves as mathematicians, with the hopes of inspiring them to consider choosing maths options as they progress through their education journey
FAQs
Q: Will lunch be provided?
A: Lunch will be provided for supervising teachers who bring a group to the event, we ask for students to bring a sandwich (or similar) and we will provide them with some additional snacks to supplement their lunch e.g. a snack bar and crisps (or similar)
Q: I'd like to bring a student group but it will be too difficult to be able to get cover for the day, what can I do?
A: The students will need to be supervised by a DBS-checked member of staff from your school who will take responsibility for the group throughout the day. This does not need to be a maths teacher.
Q: I have some students with very specific needs, will it work for them to attend?
A: We aim to be able to accommodate all students. This is not always possible but if there is anything we can do to facilitate specific needs then we will try our best. Please get in touch with the Outreach team at maths-outreach@warwick.ac.uk who has experience of accommodating special requirements at events, and can arrange to speak with you in more detail if required.
Q: Are students expected to wear uniform?
A: Yes, we ask that all students wear their school uniform.
