New starters
Induction is a crucial element of our recruitment process, ensuring all new staff are welcomed through University, School and division/ unit level induction activities.
Information for new members of staff
Induction details are included in employees’ offer letters, outlining who they will meet with, key WMS information and a specific work-area related induction checklist. Feedback from new starters about induction led to creation of an induction booklet and online links to all core and statutory information.
New starters are added to the distribution list of our weekly newsletter to make sure they're up to date with School news.
WMS welcome event
We hold induction events for new colleagues to meet one another and learn about WMS through presentations from senior team members, including about WMS organisation/governance and commitment to Athena SWAN and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. As well as presentations, members of our administrative teams (such as Marketing, Finance and Research Impact Services) attend for an informal session at the end of the day where new starters are free to chat to the teams of particular interest to them.
Getting to know WMS colleagues
New staff are introduced in the weekly WMS newsletter, with a synopsis of their role, contact details and photo (where agreed).
Colleagues are also encouraged to get to know each other at the regular WMS informal networking events.
University induction
The university holds termly “Welcome to new staff” events, which include a welcome from the senior executive team, networking and presentations on key University policies, procedures and campus-wide initiatives, such as Equality, Diversity and Inclusion activities and staff support networks.
