Fund-raising to save lives

This is a time of change for Warwick Medical School.  We will soon be celebrating the tenth anniversary of our first intake of students.  Our research is having a real impact and our graduates are making a difference to the world.

However there is so much more to do.  We know what needs to be done and we want to build on the progress we have made in our first ten years.  We have chosen to do this by launching an ambitious fundraising campaign to help advance our research into some of the world's most pressing health issues.  We have prioritised a number of areas for action:

Tackling diabetes

Over 200 million people in the world have diabetes now and the numbers are still rising.  Our leading research programme on human fat cell behaviour has shown how defects in the fat cell can lead to diabetes, high blood pressure and other life-threatening diseases.  However, there is much more to learn. We hope to open the gateway to finding an ultimate solution to the treatment of diabetes and its many detrimental health consequences.

Reducing infant mortality

With 7% of babies born prematurely in the UK alone every year, there is now an even greater risk of infant death or disability from premature labour.  We are currently developing a large research programme to understand the processes that make women go into labour with the aim of translating these research findings into improved clinical care.

Ending cardiovascular disease

Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death worldwide.  Our research focuses on the prevention, detection and treatment of cardiovascular disease, examining hypertension and the relations between nutrition, metabolic abnormalities and cardiovascular risk in developed and developing countries - particularly in West and South Africa.  Our findings translate into practical policies.  The head of our cardiovascular medicine team holds WMS' first endowed chair, extra investment will enable us to create more research teams to work in this vital area.

You can help

We believe that our friends and alumni will want to get involved.  Much of our research is funded by foundations, companies and private individuals - people like you who want to make difference to the lives of their friends and families.  We are seeking to raise £20 million by 2015 to advance our ground-breaking research into some of the world's most important health issues.  Your contribution to Warwick Medical School would help us ultimately to save lives.

Together we can make an impact.  You can make a donation online or contact Anne McKiernan to find out what you can do.
