Research workshops from the Centre for Primary Health Care Studies

Warwick's Centre for Primary Health Care Studies is at the hub of work focusing on improving health care through inter-disciplinary and multi-professional research and teaching. The Centre has four main research programmes covering self-management and patient-centred care; decision-making; service modernisation and policy; and emergency care and rehabilitation. Together they explore key areas of NHS delivery, modernisation, disease management and organisational policy.

The Centre also hosts Warwick West Midlands Primary Care Research (WWMPCR), funded by the National Coordinating Centre for Research Capacity Development. This involves working closely with academics from across the University of Warwick and Coventry University who are interested in primary care research. The Centre also works closely with a growing network of almost 100 general practices that participate in its research, as well as with local PCTs including South Warwickshire Research PCT and Coventry Teaching PCT.

WWMPCR hosted the first in a series of research workshops on 20 September at the Medical School. The event was attended by a number of primary and community care practitioners from a variety of backgrounds including Palliative Care, Mental Health, Public Health, Speech & Language Therapy, Paediatrics and General Practice. The half day workshop:

  • illustrated the relevance of research and how practitioners might get started on their own research project and
  • provided introductory research skills workshops

The programme included presentations from Vivienne Bennett, the Director of Clinical Development for Coventry PCT and Jeremy Dale, Director of WWMPCR who discussed the importance of research to the local health economy. Presentations were then given by practitioners who recalled their first experiences of undertaking research.

In response to delegates feedback WWMPCR is planning a programme of research events in 2007. This will include a repeat of the 'Doing Research Together' workshop and a series of skills specific workshops building on the introductory sessions. Plans are still in their early stages. The Centre would welcome suggestions of training sessions that delegates would find useful.
