European Working Time Directive is to improve health and safety of patients and doctors

In their Rapid Response to "Plans to update European working time legislation in disarray" (BMJ 2008; 337: a3080), Professor Francesco Cappuccio, Drs. Steven Lockley and Christopher Landrigan argue that "... it is essential that the reasons why the Directive was implemented in the first place be kept firmly in mind - to improve patient and staff safety."

Warwick Medical School plays key role in new centre of excellence

The city of Coventry has been recognised as an international centre of excellence for research into hypertension and cardiovascular disease.  

Researchers at the University of Warwick working with colleagues at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust have been given a Centre of Excellence Award for Hypertension and Cardio-Metabolic Research. 

The award, from the European Society of Hypertension, is one of only six handed out in the UK and it highlights the groundbreaking research being carried out in the areas of blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. 

Professor Franco Cappuccio, Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine and Epidemiology at Warwick Medical School, is one of the leading figures for the Centre.

Cutting junior doctors' hours does not compromise patient safety

Research led by a team at the University of Warwick’s Warwick Medical School has found that reducing the hours of junior doctors does not compromise patients’ safety and could even dramatically cut mistakes on wards but, there are some concerns about reduced educational opportunities for junior doctors which it affords.

The Research is presented today, Wednesday 2nd July 2008 , at the NHS National Workforce Projects Working Time Directive Exhibition ‘The Final Countdown’ at the ExCeL in London by Francesco P Cappuccio, Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine & Epidemiology at the University of Warwick’s Warwick Medical School.
