WMS Student Hardship Fund

This fund was specifically given to ‘support medical students who fall into financial difficulties’. A small number of students may be faced with unforeseen or exceptional circumstances (such as essential household repairs, emergency situation, court action, emergency flights home for International students, visa extensions for overseas students who have been ill, diagnostic tests for a specific learning difficulty etc.) for which we may make an exceptional award as a one-off contribution towards these costs. There is no guarantee that funds will be awarded in every case and consequently some applications will be unsuccessful.

Please note that the funds available are very limited and cannot be used to help with tuition fee costs or to provide ongoing support or lifestyle choices.

Frequently Asked Questions

+ Am I eligible?

Who can apply?

Home/EU or International students fully enrolled at Warwick Medical School on either a postgraduate or undergraduate course. You should first apply to the university hardship fund (unless there are a compelling reason why this is not possible, e.g. due to the urgency of the financial need).

+ How do I apply?

How do I apply?

The application form must be completed online. You should also attach an outcome letter from your application to the university hardship fund (or explain why an application was not possible).

+ What can I expect to receive if my application is successful?

How much may be awarded?

Grants from the fund are needs-related and assessed on an individual basis. As a result, we are unable to give a clear indication of the likely value of any possible award until an application has been submitted and the assessment process completed. There is no guarantee that funds will be awarded in every case and consequently some applications will be unsuccessful. If successful awards made are typically in the range of £100-£250. Awards of up to £1,000 can be made but this level of award can only be made with additional approval from either the Pro-Dean Education or the Dean.

+ What happens after I have submitted the application form?

What will happen after I apply?

We will arrange a mutually convenient meeting to discuss your application with you in an informal session, if needed, to understand your individual needs and concerns in detail. The content of this meeting will remain confidential within the usual boundaries. The outcome of the meeting will be that you will know whether the grant will be put forward for a formal approval from the Pro-Dean Education or whether there will be further information required before the application can be progressed. Applications are reviewed termly except in exceptional circumstances.

+ If my application is successful how will I receive the funds?

How will payment of an award by made?

Awards of small grants and hardship payments will be paid directly into students’ bank accounts or via the purchase of a physical item on your behalf such as airline ticket if that is considered more appropriate.

+ What if I disagree with the outcome of my application?

Can I appeal if unsuccessful?

The decision of the Pro-Dean Education is final. Only one application to the School will be accepted from an individual per academic year.
