Progress & Assessment

Your project supervisor will be monitoring the effort you are putting in on your project. Any student who does not appear to be making satisfactory progress on their project will be required to discuss the matter with the Director of Studies.

Credit

As you know we operate a credit accumulation scheme whereby your performance in all years of your course count towards your final degree classification. Your marks this year contribute 40% towards that final classification.

Assessed Modules

This year all lectured modules given by the Physics Department are assessed by formal examination. PX425 High Performance Computing in Physics is wholly assessed by coursework. The Physics Project is assessed on the basis of interim and final reports and the poster session.

Most of the courses given by outside departments are assessed by a combination of assessed components, e.g. essays, and examination.

Examinations

Examinations are held at two points during the year - week 30 (i.e. immediately after the Easter vacation) and in May/June. For 7.5 CAT physics modules, you are required to answer two questions (out of three) in 1.5 hours. For 15 CAT physics modules, you are required to answer three questions (out of four) in two hours.

The mathematics examinations for modules taught in the first term are usually examined in week 30.

The 4th year papers set by the Physics Department are likely to be as follows:

  • Week 30
    • PX431 Structure and Dynamics of Solids
    • PX436 General Relativity
  • Weeks 33 to 36
    • PX408 Relativistic Quantum Mechanics
    • PX416 High Energy Astrophysics
    • PX420 Solar Magnetohydrodynamics
    • PX430 Gauge Theories for Particle Physics
    • PX432 Functional Properties of Solids
    • PX435 Neutrino Physics
    • PX437 Exo-planets
    • PX438 Physics of Fusion Power
    • PX441 Quantum Theory of Interacting Particles
    • PX444 The Distant Universe
    • PX445 Advanced Particle Physics

The examination results will be available on Wednesday of the final week of Term 3.
