Health and Safety - Load Handling Training

Introduction

The training for manual and mechanical handling of loads consists of the information provided on this page. After reading and understanding this information, you must complete the form at the bottom of the page, on which you must confirm that you have done this and also agree to abide by any rules given and any related departmental policies.

Manual Load Handling

All manual handling of any load must be assessed to determine whether or not it offers a risk of injury; and if so to what degree.

Mechanically Assisted Handling

Mechanical assistance includes the use of cranes, hoists, fork trucks and handlers, slings, chains, shackles, machine skates and wheels.

  1. All mechanically assisted handling of a load must be carried out using the following rules:
    1. The work must be reported to the Mechanical Workshop Chief Technician, or his deputy, who will delegate approved person(s) to assess the work and decide on the method of lifting and any necessary transport.
    2. The method and equipment used will be noted on a suitable form for records.
    3. If the work necessary is beyond the capacity of our equipment - or in the opinion of the approved person(s) is too dangerous - external contractors will be employed
    4. In the progress of the work the approved person(s) may provide advice and monitor the efforts of others, or may take complete personal control.
    5. At all times the approved person(s) is/are to be obeyed in their directions and instructions.
    6. The approved person(s) will take note of any academic or scientific reasons for special requirements in the methods of moving and lifting a piece of equipment and work accordingly.
    7. Load handling and lifting equipment will only be issued from stores to the approved person(s).
  2. Pull trucks and sack trucks will be issued from stores to anyone on request, as will the pallet truck - with the condition that any load greater in height than the raised a handle on the truck must be referred to the approved person(s) before removals take place.
