London NERC doctoral training partnership
The Natural Environment Research Council, in collaboration with eight London-based research organisations in environmental science, invites applications for its London NERC doctoral training partnership. This provides PhD training in environmental research across a broad range of fields, with the aim of enhancing doctoral experience and preparing students to become future leaders in their field. The programme has the following structure: •year 1 autumn term – core multidisciplinary skills training; •year 1 spring term – core training and PhD project development, and field class; •year 1 summer term – students relocate to primary institution and start research; •year 2 – bespoke training courses to develop specific skills and students upgrade to full PhD status; •year 3 – students continue research at their primary institution; •year 4 – thesis writing and submission, followed by viva. The key research themes are: biodiversity, ecology and conservation; earth, atmosphere and ocean processes; environmental hazards and pollution; environmental physics and mathematical modelling; evolution and adaptation; past life and environments; solid earth dynamics; pan-disciplinary studies. Applications should be for a research theme rather than a specific project. Applicants from all over the world may apply. Funding for overseas students will only be covered at the home rate. Applicants are expected to have a 2:1 or higher in a relevant degree or equivalent or a master’s degree in a relevant subject. Studentships are for four years and include tuition fees. For 2020 to 2021, the stipend is worth £17,285 per year with London weighting, and tuition fees are worth £4,407 per year.
