The John Copas Prize in Statistics 2017/2018 (sponsored by the Faculty of Science)
Nominations are now invited for this prize, which is for the best Doctoral thesis awarded by the Statistics Department in 2017 (specifically, theses passed with no more than minor corrections and viva undertaken between 1st January 2017 and 31st December 2017).
Nominations should be made by PhD supervisors in the period from Thursday 1st March 2018 until Monday April 30th 2018. Full details are given at https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/staffresources/thesisprizes2018/ (available to academic staff on signup). Nominations should take the form of 1 page A4 making the case for the student in question, plus a copy of the thesis in final form as PDF, and should be sent to the Director of Graduate Studies <w.s.kendall@warwick.ac.uk>, copied to the PG Support Officer <stats.pg.support@warwick.ac.uk> in the period from Thursday 1st March 2018 until Monday April 30th 2018.
Note that nominations for PhD students attending a doctoral training centre should be directed in the first instance to the director of the centre.
Nominating supervisors should ensure that nominated candidates agree that, should they be selected to receive an award, that their acceptance of the award would necessitate their names being published on the Faculty of Science Webpages.
Congratulations to Dr Nikos Zygouras for obtaining an EPSRC Early Career Fellowship
Many congratulations to Dr Nikos Zygouras for obtaining an EPSRC Early Career Fellowship. These are few and far between, so well done, Nikos! The title of the project will be 'Structures and Universalities around the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang Equation' and will run from 2018 to 2023.

PhD Open day 2018 - 31 January
On Wednesday 31 January 2018, the Department of Statistics will hold a PhD open day, from 1000 to 1600 in C0.06.
The programme will be as following:
· 1000 Start (tea and coffee and biscuits);
· 1130 Talks by Director of Graduate Studies and Admissions Tutor about doing a PhD at Warwick;
· 1230 Lunch followed by coffee.
- 1330 Q&A sessions.
- 1430 Presentations by two academics:
Dr Martine Barons, “Networking probabilistic models for decision support”
Dr Shahin Tavakoli, “Statistics on Sounds of Languages ”
· 1500 Talks by two Warwick Statistics PhD students
· 1530 End (tea and coffee and biscuits).

On Wednesday 22/11, the Department of Statistics will hold a PhD open day, from 1430 to 1630 in C0.06.

- 1445 Talks by DGS/Director of OxWaSP DTC (Warwick) about doing a PhD at Warwick.
- 1515 Summary of applications procedure by Admissions Director
- 1530 Two talks by Warwick Statistics PhD students.
