Francois-Xavier Briol receives a 2016 ASA Student Paper Award
Francois-Xavier Briol recently received a 2016 Student Paper Award from the section on Bayesian statistical science of the American Statistical Association (ASA) for his paper on "Probabilistic Integration: A Role for Statisticians in Numerical Analysis?". This paper focuses on an emerging area of research called probabilistic numerics. It provides novel theoretical results guaranteeing good performance for a method called Bayesian Quadrature, and includes extensive empirical experiments in applications ranging from computer graphics to oil field simulation.
The paper originates from one of Francois-Xavier's OxWaSP mini-projects, and was written in collaboration with faculty from the University of Warwick, Chris Oates and Mark Girolami, and the University of Oxford, Michael Osborne and Dino Sejdinovic.
As part of the award, Francois-Xavier was invited to present the paper at this year's Joint Statistical Meeting in Chicago and attend the awards ceremony.
Congratulations to David Rossell on his promotion to Associate Professor
Many congratulations to David Rossell who has been promoted to Associate Professor with effect from 15th July 2016. Please join us in congratulating David on his promotion and in wishing him continued success in the Department of Statistics.
Congratulations to Dr Elke Thonnes on her Warwick Teaching Excellent Award (WATE) Commendation.
The Department of Statistics would like to congratulate Dr Elke Thonnes on her Warwick Teaching Excellent Award (WATE) Commendation. WATE recognize members of staff who have made a difference in learning and teaching and are awarded by a panel of judges drawn from across the University and chaired by Christina Hughes, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Teaching and Learning).
Elke, who is also a foundation fellow of the Warwick International Higher Education Academy, is an enthusiastic and energetic educator who is as active behind the scenes as she is in front of a class. As a WATE commendee she will be sharing her practice and experience with a wider audience through a range of follow up events and sessions over the course of the forthcoming academic year.
More information on WATE including a full list of this year’s winners and commendees can be found here.
Congratulations to Christiane Görgen on winning a Warwick Award for Teaching Excellence for Postgraduates Who Teach
