Seminars

WCPM hosts regular seminars where we invite speakers working both in fundamental methodology and on applications of predictive modelling and UQ.

These seminars have been running since October 2016 and take place on Mondays at 1pm, with a focus on all aspects of research involving significant computation. Each seminar is accessible through Teams, and the majority of seminars are held in person in D2.02 or A205B. Please see details of each seminar to confirm the format.

If you would like to be kept informed of upcoming seminars, please do sign up here or send an email to wcpm-seminar-join at listserv dot csv dot warwick dot ac dot uk.

Title: Moving out of plane: wrinkling and buckling

Abstract --

Thin structures typically buckle out of plane when compressed, giving rise to a myriad of shapes. These range from classic Euler buckling to honey coiling to microscale wrinkling patterns. Some of these situations correspond to a ``failure'', but others may be exploited for applications such as flexible electronics.

In this talk I will introduce some examples of buckling and wrinkling mechanisms, discussing their uses and the corresponding challenges. I will focus in particular on the dynamic evolution of wrinkles in elastic sheets, and describe both experimental work and mathematical models developed to study this.

Doireann O'Kiely is an applied mathematician based in the MACSI research centre at the University of LImerick, using differential equations, perturbation methods and numerical methods to study real-world physical systems. Her research interests include the dynamics of thin viscous, elastic and plastic sheets, fluid-structure interactions, and fluid-flow and reactions inside porous media. This research is motivated by and applied to problems in glass manufacture, metal forming, elastic wrinkling, decontamination, and battery modelling.
