Enterprise Information Systems


Companies today operate in a global environment. They not only deal with customers and suppliers all over the world but also themselves have operating locations in many countries across several continents. In order to function effectively they must be flexible and responsive both between company locations and in dealings with external companies. In fact, success in the global marketplace demands improvement of business performance in all aspects of management and operations.

The key enabler for this required transformation of corporate performance is enterprise-wide information systems. Many companies today see an Enterprise Resource Planning system, with its associated extensions, as the basis for integrated internal and external communication. At the heart of such systems is a set of common, corporate-standard data: this provides the basis for comprehensive Business Intelligence capabilities which in turn underpin the possibility of Corporate Performance Management.

The introduction of such wide-ranging systems is clearly much more than a systems project: it is an enormous corporate transformation programme involving a huge range of business, human and organisational issues across the various global locations and cultures where the company operates. The purpose of this module is to understand the complexity of such a programme and how it can be effectively managed.


On completion, participants will:

  1. Understand what companies hope to achieve by installing integrated corporate-wide systems in terms of both improving a company’s operational responsiveness and also developing its performance management
  2. Appreciate the complexity and range of business, human and organisational issues which arise and how they can be effectively managed
  3. Be able to apply a detailed methodology for the selection and implementation of a system appropriate to a particular business within the context of its global operations and supply chain


The module uses a case-study approach based on the needs of real-world global corporations in a particular industry sector supply chain and the management methods of major software vendors.

The case study takes students step by step through the following project activities:

  1. Assessment of strategic business priorities for systems investment
  2. Modelling of principal company business functions
  3. Selection of potential software solutions at a functional level based on understanding of capabilities provided by core ERP and extensions such as CRM, SCM, SRM, PLM, PDM, etc
  4. Identification of business improvement objectives for each function together with key performance indicators for their achievement
  5. Modelling of business processes for detailed mapping of the implementation software solution
  6. Planning of an implementation schedule in corporate locations across many countries, languages and cultures based on business priorities and organisation structure
  7. Consideration of appropriate management and user involvement related to success and failure factors
  8. Requirements for post-implementation system maintenance and vendor support
  9. Establishment of a framework for corporate performance management based on business intelligence

Relationship to other modules

Since this module considers systems for corporate-wide business functionality it inevitably touches at a high level on various topics that are addressed in much more detail in other modules such as BSSM, LOMS/SCI/SCM, CPD, ECRM,  etc. and it helps in understanding how these detailed modules fit together. 

Whether it is taken before or after the detailed modules is not important and will depend upon an individual student’s options and the constraints of the module schedule.
