Skirting Science

WMG’s Margaret Low and Diane Burton will be taking part in the Skirting Science Solihull event on Friday 26 June for 200 teenage girls from schools across the town.

A series of interactive workshops, designed to inspire the next generation of female scientists, will take place at Light Hall School for groups of 14 and 15 year olds. The WMG workshops will focus on Sensing and Control, as well as 3D Printing.

Margaret Low, Principal Teaching Fellow, will be exploring how modern hi-tech products like mobile phones work, focusing on the interaction between software and hardware, and how these devices can sense and respond to events in the environment.

The second workshop hosted by Project Officer, Diane Burton will give students an exciting insight into how 3D printers work and their potential. The students will have the opportunity to try out CAD software to build an item such as an egg cup or small pot which can then be printed in 3D.

Professor Barbara Shollock, Tata Steel Research Chair in Coating, will also be giving an inspirational closing speech to the students about the importance of engineering in modern day life.

The day forms part of a series of events to celebrate National Women in Engineering Day on 23 June. For more information visit: http://www.nwed.org.uk/ or follow @nwed2015
