Competitive Advantage in the Digital Economy 2021 (CADE 2021)
Returning for its seventh year in 2021, CADE will be held on the 2nd and 3rd June 2021. While CADE has always been held in Venice, due to the current climate we are conducting the 2021 event in an online format – Virtual Venice. Details of the format can be found on the website, linked below.
CADE 2021 aims to provide opportunities for academics and practitioners to share the latest research and practice on topics related to the research themes of Sustainability, Resilience and Trust & Privacy. Participants will be able to present in a friendly environment where emphasis is on discussion and development of the proposed work. There are awards for best paper and best developmental paper with the latter being for ECRs and PhD students.
The conference proceedings will be published by the IET and will be available through the IET Digital Library and IEEE Xplore. The proceedings will be indexed through the major databases Scopus (Elsevier); Web of Science (Clarivate Analytics); ProQuest; NLM (US National Library of Medicine); and CrossRef.
Call for Submission
We welcome submissions (valid only for those planning to present at CADE 2021) from academics, practitioners and policy makers. Submissions can be extended abstracts (2 pages) or full papers (6 pages) and should be prepared using the following format: Purpose, Theoretical Background (where appropriate), Findings, Discussion, Managerial Implications (if applicable) and Limitations. We are interested in submissions describing interdisciplinary research related to Sustainability, Resilience and Trust & Privacy. These may come from a range of disciplines, including the following: marketing, HR, operations and supply chain management, strategy, behavioural sciences, economics, philosophy of engineering and technology, information systems, computer science and cyber security. We would particularly like to encourage submissions from scholars in the wider community including anthropologists, sociologists, data scientists and those from design disciplines interested in the digital economy. We do not necessarily require empirical work, and welcome abstracts exploring conceptual ideas, and we are actively seeking work in the developmental stages of research.
Submissions should, where possible, be under the broad themes of Sustainability, Resilience, and Trust & Privacy and include but not limited to:
- Understanding the interactions of people, technology & organisations
- Data analytics for personal data; advanced services; healthcare
- Digital transformation of businesses and industries
- Service orientated business models e.g., digitally enhanced advanced services
- Blockchain & distributed ledger technologies
- Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled business models, economic models & market creation in the digital economy
- Resilient and adaptive operations and supply chain management
- Security, privacy, and forensic technologies in the digital economy
- Dynamic service platforms: service engineering, modularity, generativity & incomplete products
- Digital platforms
- Design & innovation in the digital economy
- Data as a service
- Personal data: analytics and management
- Control, privacy & trust in the digital economy
- Individuals perceptions of privacy, trust & vulnerability in the digital economy
Please submit your submission through the CADE 2021 website (by using the paper template found here), which also has further details on the conference including registration costs, network events and keynote speaker bios.
Asynchronous Presentations and Session Format
The conference will be held online and the programme with be designed around a number of general sessions and track specific sessions. Each session will last up to two hours, with three papers per session and a closing Q&A with the authors.
Presentations are asynchronous. Authors are expected to provide a 20-minute video of their presentation by the 19th May 2021 (Presentation Video Deadline). Videos are to be provided in MP4 format. An example of this is a 20-minute screencast within Microsoft Powerpoint, exported as MP4. At the end of the session, the final 20 minutes will be dedicated to a live Q&A with all the authors of the presentations in that session. We intend to identify themes amongst submissions, and group them into specific sessions to foster discussion from across the presentations in the live Q&A.
We encourage presenters to attend their asynchronous talk, as you will have the opportunity to answer questions live in the chat as your talk is played and you will be then be part of the live Q&A session at the end of the session.

Review Process
The submissions will undergo a blind review process against the following criteria:
- Topic suitability to the conference
- Justification of the purpose
- Appropriate theoretical background (where appropriate)
- Robustness of the research methodology
- Alignment between the findings/discussion and the objectives/purpose of the research
- Relevance of the contributions to theory and practice
Awards will be given for contributions of merit.
