Inaugural lecture of Professor Naomi Brookes
Inaugural lecture of Professor Naomi Brookes
Why projects fail and what can we do about it?
17 March 2020, 5.30pm - 7pm
IMC Building, Room 004, University of Warwick
Naomi Brookes has just been appointed as WMG’s first Professor of Complex Programme Management with a brief to establish a brand new research capability for WMG in Project, Programme and Portfolio Management. In her inaugural lecture, Naomi addresses the thorny problem of project performance. Projects are absolutely vital in delivering any form of innovation be it a new product, a new technology or even a business transformation! Work on these project activities in the manufacturing sector alone adds £63bn to the UK economy ever year. Yet we are really bad at delivering projects. Less than a third of projects are successful against all of their performance criteria.
Naomi draws upon her experience of project and programme delivery across European infrastructure megaprojects, nuclear decommissioning projects and major projects in the UK to explain why project delivery is so difficult. She outlines the research that has been carried out to-date to improve the situation and she presents her future plans for research at WMG to improve the delivery of transformational projects.
