18-19 September 2019 (2 days), 9am-5pm
International Institute for Product and Service Innovation (IIPSI), University of Warwick, Coventry, CV4 7AL
Who is this Masterclass for?
- Junior and mid career academics who want to be more strategic in the way they set up their research agenda that has impact on practice; win funding from industry and government; and publish in top journals
- PhD students who want a better understanding of the world of academia and what “success” looks like from multiple stakeholders
Format of Masterclass
Through the traditional topics of “Research Methodology”, covering theory, lit review, methodology, contribution and publication, Irene Ng takes you through a unique Masterclass on the lessons she has learnt through her career as an academic, practitioner and entrepreneur publishing in sociology, economics, marketing, operations and business journals; using examples from papers she has published over 15 years. She covers the essential understanding of the knowledge claimed by an academic and why research methodology underpins the credibility of that knowledge and when it matters to whom.
Irene will not only cover the knowledge and understanding of research, but it’s politics and the funding landscape through her experiences as a social scientist with more then £10m grant portfolio across EPSRC and ESRC research councils;
Irene will also talk about creating “rainbow connections” – industry, governmental and academic funding collaborations – lessons she learnt through her advisory and consultancy practices assisting organisations in health, defence, shipping, data and digital economy over the years and how they have developed her theoretical sensitivities as an academic while creating impact in practice.
Finally, Irene talks about the evolution of the modern academic in a digital, multi-disciplinary and multi stakeholder era and how, as she is now 50% an academic and 50% an entrepreneur/practitioner, leverages the opportunities and experiences to push the cutting edge in research and practice to become better in both.
