WMG responds to industry demand with new robotics degree

WMG, University of Warwick, has launched a new undergraduate programme, BEng Robotics Engineering with Artificial Intelligence (AI), expanding its undergraduate education portfolio.

Two female students look at a piece of robotic technology in a lab environment.

The course has been developed in response to significant technological transformations across industry, driven by the increasing use of robotics and AI.

As these technologies are applied to address complex global challenges, there is a growing demand for graduates who combine technical expertise with the required soft skills to lead multidisciplinary engineering teams and deliver innovative, impactful solutions.

Drawing on WMG’s research expertise in robotics and AI, the three-year programme offers students the opportunity to bring together hardware and software to solve complex engineering problems.

The course is hands-on and project-based, with groupwork embedded throughout the programme and few traditional exams. Students undertake practical projects at the end of each year; there are plans in the works for these to be developed alongside industry partners, offering students the chance to solve real-world challenges.

While the degree is rooted in robotics engineering with AI, the applied and multidisciplinary nature of the programme means that graduates will be well-prepared for careers across a wide range of sectors.

Professor Rob Thornton, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programmes at WMG, commented: “This is an exciting time for WMG, launching our first new undergraduate course for many years that we feel is perfectly aligned with the rapid industrial transformation taking place all over the world, with increasing use of robotics and artificial intelligence.

“Our vision for this course is to prepare graduates who are confident working with complex modern systems and technology, and who are adaptable to the changing needs of modern industry.”

The launch of this course coincides with a global growth boom in robotics, with the International Federation of Robotics reporting significant growth in service robot applications Link opens in a new windowacross transport, hospitality, and cleaning industries.

WMG now offers two full-time undergraduate programmes and two undergraduate Degree Apprenticeship programmes.
