Volunteers from the University of Warwick have been sharing their computer programming skills with parents, teenagers and younger children in Coventry.

Students and staff organised a drop in session at BBC Coventry and Warwickshire's Open Centre in Priory Place during half-term break where anyone could have a go at creating their own computer game or animation. There was also help at hand for anyone who wanted to know a little bit more about how computers work.

The Technology Volunteers scheme which was set up by Margaret Low a Senior Research Fellow at WMG, encourages undergraduate volunteers to share their technology skills with young people in the local community.

Peter Rose, from Warwick Volunteers at the University, explained: “This is a fun, hands-on introduction to software development and is suitable for anyone over the age of eight.

“Very often people are daunted by computers but this drop-in session is designed to show how easy it can be to be creative and design your own games and applications. We’re hoping it will inspire and encourage young people and adults to carry on the good work started here, at home.”

The afternoon’s activity was part of a series of events organised by Warwick Volunteers which seeks to build relationships and share skills with the local community. To find out more about Warwick Volunteers contact volunteers@warwick.ac.uk
