WMG PhD researcher wins 1st prize in Midlands Regional Doctorate student competition

Jason JonesWMG PhD researcher Jason Jones has won 1st prize in a Midlands Regional Doctorate student competition, organised by Viate, for his poster entitled ‘3D photocopying’. This is the highest prize awarded for PhD posters in the country.

The Midlands Hub held the 6th annual Poster Competition in July at Nottingham Trent University. There were seventy seven research posters from 13 regional universities, which were judged by 50 judges from across the Midlands.

Jason had already won the University of Warwick Science Faculty prize in May and won the regional prize against competition from winners at each of the Universities in the Midlands.

Jason said “It was great to see people’s excitement as they realized what we already make using 3D printing and what will be possible in the future. Our work is pioneering desktop manufacturing direct from computer models which we expect will ultimately enable the entire creative world. I am grateful my poster presentation received highest honours at the competition and hope it is a prelude to further commercialisation.

Dr Greg Gibbons, Head of Rapid Prototyping at WMG who is Jason’s supervisor comments “I am very proud of Jason for achieving this award. This reflects the extremely high quality of his research, and the high level of dedication and professionalism that he displays. This is also truly indicative of the high quality of research undertaken within WMG.”

3D photocopying – Despite the ubiquitous presence of photocopying in offices worldwide, 3D printing has yet to fully utilise this printing technique. Jason’s research is aimed at overcoming the limitations of conventional photocopiers to unlock the speed, resolution, and efficiency of photocopying for making 3D objects directly from toner.
