A new multi-million-pound ‘Smart City Mobility Centre', to be established in Warwickshire and the West Midlands was announced last night (Monday 12^th November 2018) at the Coventry and Warwickshire Automotive Dinner in Warwickshire’s Coombe Abbey Hotel.

WMG Chairman Professor Lord Bhattacharyya announced that Europe’s first multi-million-pound Smart City Mobility Centre will be based at the University of Warwick’s Wellesbourne campus, with driverless capable vehicle testing on the University of Warwick’s campus in Coventry and Warwickshire.

The Centre brings together WMG’s research expertise and Jaguar Land Rover’s leading research and engineering capabilities.

Professor Lord Bhattacharyya received an honorary Doctor of Science degree, from the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology on 10 September 2018.

At a ceremony held at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in India, Professor Lord Bhattacharyya was conferred a D.Sc (honoris causa) in recognition of his contribution to engineering and academic leadership.

Professor Lord Bhattacharyya is a long term and committed collaborator with India, with WMG working with many companies on research and development, as well as educating future engineers, technologists and managers.

Professor Lord Bhattacharyya, Chairman and Founder of WMG, said: “I am delighted to be awarded an honorary degree for my contribution to research and education and its widespread application throughout the world including India.”

Lord Bhattacharyya began his career as a graduate apprentice at Lucas Industries, subsequently gaining an MSc and PhD in Engineering Production at the University of Birmingham. In 1980, he became Britain’s first ever Professor of Manufacturing setting up WMG, at the University of Warwick.

Since then he has built a world-class research and education group, working with industry to innovate and develop the leaders of tomorrow.

Today, WMG employs over 700 people across research, teaching, professional and administration. There are a total of 19 different research groups working across multiple sectors, and to date over 35,000 students from across 75 countries have studied here.

A new research project, Tucana, will focus on lighweighting technology, delivering stiffer and lighter vehicle structures with the help of experts from WMG, at the University of Warwick.

The research will develop world-leading cost effective, scalable carbon fibre composite solutions, with the view to boosting the performance of electric vehicles. The CO2 benefit of the project between 2023-2032, will be 4.5 million tonnes.

WMG will receive £4m, of the £18.7m government funding through the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC), to drive the development of innovative lightweight vehicle and powertrain structures, building on the UK’s leading-edge capability in this area.

Project Tucana will allow the true environmental credentials of electric vehicles to be realised by enabling wider adoption. Tucana will deliver this step-change by addressing structural performance at a design, material and volume manufacturing-level which is currently unmet across the industry.

At a ceremony at the Indian Institute of Information Technology at Allahabad, which is the largest of its kind in India, Professor Lord Bhattacharyya was conferred a D.Sc (honoris causa) in recognition of his contribution, and creation, of WMG with its world renowned application of cutting edge technology.

Professor Lord Bhattacharyya was pleased to welcome a delegation from Tata Sons to WMG recently.

The delegation led by Mr Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons were given a tour of the National Automotive Innovation Centre (NAIC). The Centre, which is a long-term commitment between Jaguar Land Rover, Tata Motors European Technical Centre, WMG and the University of Warwick, is a unique resource and the first of its kind in Europe, providing an environment to foster collaboration, cohesion and sharing knowledge, combining automotive expertise nationally and internationally.

The visitors were also shown our state-of-the-art 3xD Simulator for Intelligent Vehicles where experts explained more about Midlands Future Mobility, a £25m project led by WMG which will see roads in Coventry and Birmingham become the UK testbed for developing the next generation connected and autonomous vehicles.

Finally, Mr Chandrasekaran and his colleagues were given a tour of our Energy Innovation Centre, which is going through significant expansion, and will see WMG to continue to provide a unique facility for industry and academia to develop innovative energy storage technology.

Mr Chandrasekaran and his colleagues was very interested to see for themselves some of the WMG projects and commented on the quality of research and innovative approach to R&D.

Professor Lord Bhattacharyya received an honorary degree for his contribution to science and engineering, from the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) on Friday (29 June 2018). The degree was conferred by the University of Science and Technology Beijing, and the conferment was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council of China.

China has been very interested in how Professor Lord Bhattacharyya has created effective innovative approaches to science and technology, over the past 40 years, and the huge successes that WMG has had nationally and internationally.

Professor Lord Bhattacharyya, Chairman and Founder of WMG, said: “I am delighted to be awarded an honorary degree for my contribution to science and engineering, and honoured to receive this from such a prestigious university.”

The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Justin Welby, visited WMG at the University of Warwick today (4 May 2018), as part of his ‘homecoming’ tour around Coventry, the city where he was first ordained.

During his visit to WMG, Archbishop Welby toured world-class automotive research facilities, including the Energy Innovation Centre and the new £150m National Automotive Innovation Centre (NAIC) with WMG Chairman Professor Lord Bhattacharyya.

He also joined a small group of business leaders to discuss the future of smart, connected and electrified vehicles, and the renaissance of the automotive industry in the West Midlands– topics which are at the heart of WMG research and development...

Professor Lord Bhattacharyya, Chairman and founder of WMG, at the University of Warwick, has been honoured by the presentation of a China Talent Visa (R), in recognition of his high-level expertise in manufacturing and inward investment and sustained interaction with the People’s Republic of China.

The China Talent Visa (R) was presented to Professor Lord Bhattacharyya by the Chinese Ambassador to the UK, His Excellency, Ambassador Liu Xiaoming, in a special ceremony at the Chinese Embassy in London today (Tuesday 3^rd April).

Professor Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya, founder and Chairman of WMG was delighted to welcome the Education Select Committee to WMG today (Monday 26th February).

Whilst at WMG, the Committee met with current students, studying on a range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, who were able to talk to them about teaching quality, tutor support, fees and how their degrees are helping them prepare for the world of work. They also met with students who are working and undertaking degree apprenticeships, paid for by their employers, and wanted to understand how their experiences differ to full-time students, and why they chose this route over a traditional university degree.
