How innovation builds a stronger future for your SME

How innovation builds a stronger future for your SME

In a time of rising energy costs, tighter supply-chains, and increasing pressure to decarbonise, many manufacturing SMEs in the UK are asking: where do we start with innovation?

Innovating within your SME can lead to transformative results such as 80% reduction in manufacturing lead time and grant support for business-changing machinery.

Innovation Manager and International Collaborations for WMG’s SME Group, David Nicol shares why innovation must be practical, accessible and built around the people and assets you already have.

Getting started with innovation

SMEs face a unique set of pressures: small margins, limited in-house research and development capacity and a fast-changing regulatory environment. But innovation doesn’t always require big tech or big spend; often the most valuable investments for businesses are your people, culture and mindset.

At WMG, I focus on building bridges: between the UK and global partners, academia and industry and between local needs and scalable innovation.

From working with SMEs in the West Midlands to embed sustainable energy practices and working with governments and institutions in Asia, it’s clear that innovation helps to create a future where emerging businesses can excel.

Here are three areas where SMEs can realistically embed energy and sustainability innovation:

  • Incremental energy-saving and decarbonisation projects: Small-scale changes like energy improvements, process adjustments, or clean-energy options that reduce costs and environmental impact.
  • Collaborative projects and knowledge exchange: Working with academia, research partners or international collaborators to help SMEs access expertise that they often don’t hold internally. At WMG, this can take the form of funded innovation programmes, business support, or collaborations and can often lead to hiring talented interns to battle the manufacturing skills crisis.
  • Leadership and culture change: Equipping managers and teams with a long-term mindset, adaptability, and openness to change. As my colleague Liz McArdle highlighted in ‘Future-proofing your business starts with people, not pounds’, strong leadership and a culture of continuous improvement often deliver more impact than one-off investments.

Research shows that investing in leadership capability leads to measurable improvements in productivity. A report from Make UK found that:

  • 64% of SMEs see visionary leadership as “very important” to growth.
  • 52% say the ability to deliver transformational change is crucial to scaling successfully.

Embedding innovation into businesses through business transformation, graduate interns or digitalisation can drive growth and ensure a sustainable business for the future, whether at an SME or a global corporation.

At WMG, working at the intersection of engineering, policy and international collaboration; my focus isn’t just on developing technologies, but on creating the conditions for innovation to thrive.

Three principles for sustainable innovation for SMEs

From my experiences supporting businesses on their innovation journeys, there are three key insights that help drive innovation, and can deliver ongoing and sustainable success.

  1. Redefine success
Innovation doesn’t always mean ‘newer’ or ‘faster’; it can mean, cleaner, more resilient and cost-effective. Success isn’t always measured in patents or profits, but in securing jobs, reducing carbon and increasing growth, scalability and skills.
  2. Make innovation accessible
Innovation should feel achievable. SMEs don’t have to go big: small, incremental changes or partnerships can deliver substantial value. Existing people, equipment, and small investments can be enough to deliver meaningful changes.
  3. Build for the long term
Real, lasting impact requires time and planning: embedding new ways of working, building internal capability, and investing in talent and leadership. This is especially important given cyclical market pressures and evolving regulatory requirements.

How WMG can support you

WMG’s SME Group delivers tailored innovation support for SMEs. Not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution but a flexible, collaborative partnership, which has helped introduce 866 new products and processes to SME manufacturers.

We combine:

  • Access to research and global best practice (engineering, energy, policy, sustainability).
  • Tailored expertise; working with SMEs to define what “innovation” means for them, based on context, resources, and ambition.
  • Practical guidance and support to de-risk change; integrating new technologies or processes, navigating funding or grants and building long-term capability.

For SME manufacturers, innovation doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing gamble. It can (and should) be a series of deliberate, practical steps: small changes today, structured support, and long-term vision.

Together, we can make innovation not a buzzword, but a real-world tool for resilience, sustainability, and growth.
