High-Volume Automotive Composite Manufacturing Projects

Projects

Within our dedicated facility, we transition new technologies from the laboratory through to high-volume production readiness for both thermoset and thermoplastic composite components.

ESHADOW

WMG are collaborating with Ford, Gestamp Chassis, and Expert T&A on APC-funded industrial research project eSHADOW (Electrified Structural Hybrid Automotive Designs for Optimised Weight). The 3-year project aims to develop hybrid material structural engineering tools to promote lightweight design and verification for Product Development processes. Ultimately, the consortium will create a lightweight multi-material solution for a candidate rolling chassis frame to improve vehicle efficiency and promote the adoption of zero-emission vehicle architectures within the commercial vehicle sector.

Our role in the eSHADOW project is to provide multi-material joining and composite manufacturing expertise. Manufacturability at scale will be demonstrated using volume manufacturing processes to develop structural carbon fibre components in WMG’s new Materials Engineering Centre using dedicated, industry-leading facilities. These components will be used in vehicle demonstrators benchmarked to Ford standards to prove out the design and enable validation of the newly formulated predictive design tools.
