Our Sectors Overview

Automated Transport Systems (ATS) in each of the transport domains (land, air and marine) will need to be proven safe before and during their commercial deployment.

However, each transport domain will have a variety of use cases for commercialisation. In order to have efficient safety assurance processes, it is important to create a methodology for answering the above, which is both scalable and pragmatic while maintaining high benchmarks for safety. This will enable the reuse of tools, processes and investment across the various transport domains in a holistic manner.

Automotive automation

Drawing on learnings from the aviation domain, our research work focuses on creating better and more detailed safety management systems and guidance for simulation qualification to be developed for upcoming regulations for automated driving as part of the UK’s secondary legislation for the Automated Vehicles Act and the Automated Driving System Regulation at the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe.

Aviation automation

To embed a deeper systems thinking approach to safety, our team worked with the UK Civil Aviation Authority and industry to understand and establish the safety requirements for future policy for the safe introduction of eVTOL and drone applications.

We aim to expand our safety management work to other emerging aviation technologies across the UK and other countries.

Maritime automation

The maritime domain is inherently international, and any discussions on any topic (especially safety) need to be ultimately undertaken at a global level.

Our research group, joined with the wider UK ecosystem, is playing a leading role in engaging in strategic discussions with key partners in Singapore, Japan, Canada, Latvia, and Korea.
