Millions of patients worldwide with neurodegenerative diseases can exhibit significant problems correctly identifying smells and tastes. A novel prototype Flavour Based Test (FBT) device has been developed at the University of Warwick to deliver high-fidelity simulated flavours using UK Standard Agency approved food safe chemicals. The simulation enables a wide range of flavours to be presented to users in order to assess patients’ ability to perceive any differences between them.
Digital Tourism
Digital Tourism (DT) provides inexpensive and inclusive high-fidelity experiences which are applicable to many segments of UK's £146 billion tourism industry. This project has captured all the sensory stimuli of a real-world “tourism experience”: A flight in the open cockpit of Tiger Moth aircraft. These are used to recreate a high-fidelity virtual experience of the flight, in a safe, controllable, inclusive and repeatable manner.
Power Saving in Mobile Devices
HDR and high-resolution video on mobile phones provide an enhanced viewing experience but with a substantial impact on power consumption and thus battery life. A new methodology has been developed to accurately predict power consumption. This will be used to control viewing parameters, such as brightness and resolution, to ensure the best viewing experience for the longest battery life.
VR for Refugees
Virtual reality has been used to address the major difficulty that refugees encounter when dealing with healthcare in their new countries. In particular, this project shows that VR can significantly help refugees navigate the UK’s complex National Health Service (NHS).
Filming a rocket launch in HDR
Traditional imaging techniques are incapable of accurately capturing or displaying the full range of lighting in a scene, resulting in some areas of the image that are under-exposed and others over-exposed. The project worked with NASA’s Advanced Imaging Lab to capture, for the first time in the world, a rocket launch at the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, USA, in High Dynamic Range, enabling all the detail to be seen both of the vehicle and in the bright engine flame.
