WMG story : Nina Meilatinova
Starting my studies at WMG
I always wondered how it would feel to live in different country and interact with people from different backgrounds. My background is in Information Systems, so I decided to choose e-business area for my postgraduate study. E-business is a very growing in business industry in accordance with the needs of people in internet technology. At that time, there are only few universities that offer courses relate to e-business area. After doing research for the offered modules, location, and learning style, I chose to take e-Business Management course in University of Warwick.
During class
The learning style in WMG is different with other universities. One thing that I liked in this course: there were no written exams. The course is assessed primarily through written assignments, which required students to do research in many sources such as books, journals, articles, and so on. This kind of learning style is more effective than just studying for an exam, as the knowledge becomes deeply embedded, rather than just memorising to pass a test. By doing research, I can understand deeper about the course modules, and still remember to this day what I learned on the course.
There were many challenges during my time studying, but it was fun as well. I met many different people during class and working with them was a good experience since we can share ideas from different views. We solved the assignment and made the final presentation to be presented on the last day of each module. I met many friends and made a lot of connections with people from different countries. Making good friends are important here, since when I had a lot of burden during research or studying, we can have a rest for a moment and do something fun together to release our stress and anxiety. We always did something fun not only during class module, but also out of class time. We watched movies, had lunch picnics, played games, and had dinner together after finished each module.
Industry visit
When living abroad, I am always curious how people in different country works and WMG has the industry event to fulfil my curiosity. I usually checked the email regularly as well as the website to see the announcement of this event, because only limited number of people can join this event in first come first served method, and it always sold out quickly in just few minutes! Luckily, I was able to join this event in more than four times during my study in Warwick. I was always impressed during industry visit since I can see what the company looks like inside and learn how the business process conducts.
Graduate
The source of the highest score is obtained from a final project, which is worth 50% of our final grade during study in Warwick. There is a supervisor that will guide and advise you through the project. The research was quite challenging but also enjoyable. The skills and knowledges I gained when doing the research helped me how to understand various issues and analyse in critical way, and it becomes invaluable experience for life and career of mine. There was a celebration party after submitted the project, which made it more memorable event.
