What was your background and what made you decided to study for a EngD at WMG?

I had previously completed my Mechanical Engineering masters within the Engineering School at Warwick. As part of this, my third-year research project involved machining research trials based at WMG. This sparked my interest for further sturdy in a research environment and subsequently led to my enrolment on the EngD programme within WMG.

Tell us a about your research project - what were you working on and in what area?

My project was focussed on the joining of multi-material structures for future lightweight vehicles. These structures enable the use of optimum material combinations to maximise vehicle weight savings, enhance performance and minimise fuel consumption. Specifically, the project addressed the use of structural adhesives to join the vehicle structure. Key areas being optimal surface treatment techniques and achieving the required cure speed to meet high volume manufacturing requirements.

How did you find the experience of studying for your EngD? Was it what you expected? Any advice for future students?

A thoroughly rewarding experience, with a great sense of self achievement and ability to influence your own project direction. The EngD programme sets you up perfectly for a career in engineering, developing valuable analysis and problem-solving skills. My advice to future students would be to get out to conferences, exhibitions and similar opportunities to network and understand the wider industry around their subject area.

Where are you now? What are you plans?

I have been working full time at Aston Martin Lagonda since completing my EngD, in a very similar area to my research project’s focus.
