Optional Modules

The following section provides information about your optional modules. These optional modules are for students in the Department of Economics students only.

Core Modules

The core modules for each course are mandatory and you must take these courses. Your timetable has been prepared so that there are no overlaps between your core modules' lectures, Classes, Tests, and other activities.

You do not need to pre-register or manually register for the core modules on your course. You will be automatically registered before the start of the academic year for the core modules.

Optional Core Modules

Optional core modules are modules which are compulsory but which offer an element of choice within a subset of modules, meaning that you are asked to choose between one module or another or, for example, two modules from a subset of five.

There are a limited number of Optional Core Modules you will be offered for your course. You will need to choose between the options. Like the Core modules, the Optional Core modules have been timetabled to avoid overlapping of Lectures, Classes, and Tests with the Core Modules

Economics Students' Optional Modules

Optional Modules : There are a number of types of Optional Module referred to in this section, which are named according to the process by which you can select them:

  • Optional Economics Modules are provided by the Department of Economics
  • Optional External Modules are provided by other departments at Warwick which include:
    • Optional Language Modules are provided by the University's Language Centre, as well as the French, German, and Italian Departments
    • Optional IATL and WIISP modules are provided by the Institute for Advanced Teaching and Learning (IATL)
  • Approved Optional Modules are external Modules which have been previously taken by Economics students and therefore do not require you to make an "unusual options" application to apply to those modules.
  • Unusual Options. These are all the external optional modules that are not approved modules, and require you to complete an "unusual options" application before pre-registering for these modules.

Economics Students' External options

If you are considering an external option (outside of Economics), you should contact the department concerned for more information about the module content and how to register for that module. Applying for a module is not a guarantee of acceptance.

If you are interested in taking a module in another department (approved or unusual), you should contact the Undergraduate Office of the department where the module is based. You will need to follow their procedures and should check their webpages for more information.

See the External Department Module Information section below for information on Module related activities, event, fairs, and sign ups by other departments in the university.

The university has compiled a Module Catalogue which can help you view the modules run by all the departments.

Year 1 - Approved Optional Modules

Some modules offered by other departments have been designated as ‘Approved Optional Modules’ because in the past Economics Department Students have taken these modules and the process for validating them has already been undertaken.

This means that if you want to take a module that is on the Approved Optional Modules list for your year of study, you do not need to complete an unusual module request form. However, it is still your responsibility in choosing your modules to ensure that you have met all relevant prerequisites and have obtained permission from the department offering the module.

You must also ensure that the modules you choose meet your degree course regulations. Thus, although a module may be on the approved list, you can only take it if it fits in with your degree regulations, you have the pre-requisites and any other permissions.

WBS Modules modules

WBS module information is found on my.wbs. There is an extensive module resource hub with a number of resources available to students. To log in please go to my.wbs.ac.uk logging in using your IT Services usercode and password.

Language modules

Language modules are offered by the University’s Language Centre, and also by the French, German, and Italian Departments. You can find more details of the language modules on the websiteLink opens in a new window and should contact the departments directly for further information and advice. If you are going to France, Spain or Germany on Study Abroad, it is a requirement to have an appropriate level of the language.

Please note the following rules regarding Language modules:

  • No more than 30 CATS of language options may be taken in each year.
  • You cannot study two languages, so any language module taken must be in the same language as a previous language module and show progression.
  • Final year students may only take FHEQ level 6 modules.

IATL and WIISP modules

Students can take a maximum of 15 CATS of modules delivered by the Institute for Advanced Teaching and Learning (IATL) across their second and final years combined. Please check the Economics webpages for the IATL modules you are permitted to take. You should speak directly to IATL about the modules to gain their permission to take the module, as places are limited.

There are also opportunities to take modules as part of the Warwick International Intensive Study Programme (WIISP) either for credit or not for credit. You will need to speak to the WIISP team about their modules and the application process.

Unusual options

For many degree courses and cohorts, the choice of options is wider than the department lists published.

If you wish to take an option module that is not listed as 'an approved option', please submit an unusual option formLink opens in a new window. You must make a case based on special individual circumstances, because permission will not be granted under normal circumstances. Your request will be considered on its merits by the module approval team. They will make a decision, after checking for consistency and fair treatment. However, please note that a request to take an optional module in order to obtain exemption from examinations for professional qualifications in the future will not be sufficient.

Requests to take modules that contravene your degree course regulations will not be permitted and it is your responsibility to check this.

Considering your module choices

We recommend that you understand how the total number of CATS points you need to accumulate is made up in each year of your study from the core, optional core, and optional modules available to your according to your Course Regulations:

It is important to note at which FHEQ level and from which department you can make your choices. You will also note that in your second and final year you are not always restricted to taking only second year modules in your second year, or third year modules in your third year.

It is especially important in your first year, to read the First Year Course Structure, Second Year Course Structure, and Third Year Course structure sections. This is because some modules that you may want to take in your second or final years require you to have taken a specific introductory module in a previous year. These requirements are Module Pre-requisitesLink opens in a new window.

Pre-requisites

Some second and third year modules have pre-requisites. This means that before you can take them, you must have already studied the stipulated pre-requisite modules in order to give you the relevant background knowledge.

Your choice of optional modules in your first and second years may, therefore, affect the modules available to you in your second and third years. If you do not have relevant pre-requisites, you will not be permitted to take certain modules, so it is important to check the pre-requisites of modules you might want to study in later years, before choosing your modules for your first and second years.

Introduction to Optional Module Registration

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have registered for your modules correctly.

There are deadlines for choosing and registering your Optional Core and Optional modules:

  • Pre-Registration - During the summer, before the start of the new academic year, you must consider your module choices and pre-register for those modules. You will be sent an email when the online pre-registration portal is open.

  • Please note: Failure to undertake these steps correctly can have serious consequences for your study

Module waitlists

Following student feedback an online waitlist system has been developed when a module is at capacity. Module numbers are reviewed each day and once a module is full, students will receive an email to complete a form that will add to the waitlist. If you pre-registered your modules choices in May 2025 you will be given priority to join the module. Otherwise places will be allocated on first come, first served basis.
