EDI in PAIS

As a department we are committed to advancing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in all areas of our work as well as in our engagement with external stakeholders, local communities and prospective students. We have an EDI committee made up of academic, professional services staff and student representatives. Our Director of EDI also sits on the Department’s Senior Management Team as a Deputy Head of Department. Current staff and students can access the PAIS EDI committee website here.

Our Commitment to EDI reflects and builds upon the University’s values as well as the Dignity at Warwick Principles. Within the Department of Politics and International Studies (PAIS), we have advanced EDI through a range of projects and initiatives. These include:

Athena Swan Silver Award

PAIS has achieved the Athena Swan Silver award, a prestigious UK charter mark that recognises the advancement of gender equality in higher education.
The assessment panel evaluating PAIS's eligibility for Silver recognition commended the department's advancements in a number of areas including the notable rise in female Professors achieved through internal initiatives that have fostered and enhanced women's career progression, the closure of the gender awarding gap, and the work that PAIS is doing in relation to rethinking the content and delivery of the curriculum.

Decolonising the Curriculum working Group

The Decolonising the Curriculum Working Group (DCWG) was set up in early 2018 (initially as the Liberated Curriculum Working Group), with the aim of making PAIS’s teaching more diverse and inclusive.
DCWG is student-driven with the support of PAIS staff and provides guidance for the department as a whole.

Widening participation

We are committed to widening participation and increasing our engagement with schools in the West Midlands and beyond.
We offer Pathways to Politics taster days designed to demystify university study and inspire students from diverse backgrounds to consider applying for undergraduate courses in politics and international studies.
Through projects such as Colonial Hangover and the Sutton Trust Summer School we seek to raise aspirations among prospective students to encourage wider access to higher education.

Student liaison representatives (SLRs) Inclusive Education in PAIS

PAIS strives to maximize inclusivity in the educational experience for all our students.
These efforts encompass conducting student focus groups, formulating guidelines for best practices in inclusive education, facilitating staff clinics where students from diverse backgrounds share their learning experiences, and crafting resources for inclusive education classrooms.
