Hear from one of our 2023 Student Review Leads!
Unlike Student Panellists, Student Leads worked with their home department to coordinate the delivery of the department’s ITLR review. They did not sit on the review panel but worked with their own department to prepare documents for the review and ensure that these accurately represent the student voice.
Can you please state your name and your role in ITLR 2023?
My name is Akua Debrah. I am a History and Politics student and I am a student reviewer
How has your role in the university contributed to discussions in the panel?
I think my role as a student and also as part of the Widening Participation team has really just been able to bring the student perspective back into the ITLR. So it's not too much of an older generation or an adult or teaching perspective, but also a young adult perspective into how it affects students on a day-to-day basis.
What skills have you developed that may impact your career and employability going forward?
Definitely teamwork and team building, I think working on the report together and just utilising the different skills that we have as a team, but also bringing out your own strengths and letting your own voice be heard, but also working as a team for feedback and being critical of one another.
I think those skills are definitely transferable to every single kind of workplace and I think I was really able to work on that during the idea.
To what extent do you feel that discussions engaged in positive critical analysis between peers?
I think the discussions were very positive and very critical. In the same way, I think we were able to explore things and check each other to make sure that we weren't being biased, but also making sure that we were thorough and everything that we did and got to the nooks and crannies of how things operate and how things could be better. So I think they were very critical, but in a positive way.
What's been the highlight of the ITLR for you?
I think the highlight is definitely working with the team. The whole review panel was absolutely amazing to work with. Everyone had different experiences, different backgrounds, and we just meshed together really, really well. So I think that was just such an amazing experience.
What advice would you give to another student that said they were going to take part in the ITLR?
Definitely, definitely go for it. It's very, very flexible with your degree and it's just perfect experience for the workplace. Just knowing how to review things and work on things and step into a department that you haven't seen before. Just a very fun experience and very beneficial for your own personal development.
