Right to Remedy Failure Consultation

December 2025 - February 2026

There is a concern that undergraduate students with a high assessment load after the Summer Boards of Examiners may be at risk of failing due to having insufficient time to prepare. The main proposed amendment to the Right to Remedy Failure Policy allows Boards of Examiners to offer undergraduate students the opportunity to delay assessments to take them without residence if they have a high assessment load following the Summer Board. Additional minor tweaks are also proposed.

Regulation 11 describes the sanctions available to an Academic Conduct Panel (ACP) or Academic Integrity Panel (AIP) when academic misconduct has been investigated and found. However, to develop greater consistency of sanctions across disciplines, departments and panels, a code of practice on sanctions is desirable. Academic Integrity Leads, staff involved in ACPs and any other people with an interest are invited to provide feedback.

The Rules for Award was used to recommend Awards for finalists for the first time in Summer 23/24. It was noted that some aspects of the information layout and phrasing in Rules for Award is not easily accessible for staff and students. There are some types of students and provision that are not clearly defined and some potential misinterpretations which have been described in informal guidance. A limited rewording of Rules for Award (for entry 25/26 and revisions to previous editions) has been developed by a working group to provide greater clarity in the structure and phrasing. Departments are asked to review the proposed rewrite to Rules for Award and provide feedback to;

  • Verify that there are no new principles unintentionally introduced and check that that the revisions do not cause unintended consequences
  • Ensure that the Rules for Award clearly covers the types of provision delivered by the Department.
  • Highlight any necessary amendments to other existing policies or approved variations

This consultation is now closed. Please see the assessment conventions webpages for the revised versions of Rules for Award.
